Ashtagon’s Northern Kompor-Thap, 8 miles per hex
After posting her finished map of Patera at 24 miles per hex in September 2025, it wasn’t long before Emma returned with a new development for Mystara’s invisible moon: the first preview of an 8 mile per hex map. As with the 24 mile per hex map, Emma chose Kompor-Thap to be the first area she posted.
Between the two maps, she had also looked into solving the problems with the 24 mile per hex map — primarily the fact that it didn’t include enough terrain to cover a full globe. She referenced this in her comment at The Piazza when she posted this preview:
Eight-mile-scale version of my earlier map. I’ve also fixed the map scaling so it is a true equirectangular map projection. Yes, that does create map distortions at high latitudes, which I discussed in another thread.
There’s lots of villages and a few lakes and other natural features that need names. If anyone wants to offer serious suggestions, I’m willing to consider them. This map also showcases quite a few symbols not previously seen before (hills with light and heavy forest, hills with light and heavy jungle, two versions of “high mountains”, domestic cats, pawprints (wild animals or monsters present), and long (Chinese) dragons.
Due to the east-west stretching of the map, this map’s version of Kompor-Thap looked a little different from the 24 mile per hex map’s. This was intended, with the 8 mile per hex map meant to take precedence over the smaller scale map and eventually supersede it entirely.
There were a lot of amazing things about Emma’s project to map the whole moon at this scale. Even in this small preview, a lot of these were already visible, such as her use of Asian scripts in addition to the usual Latin alphabet map labels. I had previously done this with my own map of Myoshima (and before that in some of my Calidar maps). Whether she was inspired by that, or simply came up with the idea herself independently, I’m not sure, but either way, Emma now took this concept to even greater heights, incorporating not just one but several different scripts. In addition to the Japanese that I had used for Myoshima, she now adopted the relevant original language for each nation of Patera — starting with Devanagari for Kompor-Thap’s Indian-themed names.
It would be some time before she posted the finished map, but already it was clear that this was a huge and ambitious project.
