Ramelin’s Esterhold, 8 miles per hex v1
Jose’s last map of 2017 was also his first ever of mainland Skothar. Amazingly, he had previously only covered it on the edges of his maps of Bellissaria and Zyxl. It’s surprising that he had already mapped almost all of Brun as well as large areas of Davania without ever setting foot on Skothar. On the other hand, Skothar remains the most neglected of Mystara’s three continents — by official products, by fan creators, and indeed by fan cartographers.
It comes as no surprise at all that he chose Esterhold to begin his forays into Skothar, as it is the most mapped part of the continent. Nevertheless, even Esterhold had only been mapped at 24 miles per hex until Jose’s map, and only a few times. This map was the first ever to feature the continent front and centre at 8 miles per hex.
For his detailing, Jose appears to have used Kal’s 2005 Bellissaria and Esterhold map as his primary source. The settlements and road systems in Blackrock and Verdan are clearly based on Kal’s work. He did not add a great deal else in the way of settlements, though he put his customary high level of detail into the terrain, including a few new labels.
Jose would revisit this map a few months later for a minor update.
