Ashtagon’s HWR1 The Azcan Empire, 8 miles per hex v2
In September 2026, Emma posted an art update to DeviantArt for her Azcan Empire map from three years before. She explained the changes as follows:
The two main changes from the v1 map are a) I changed the roads, trails, and sea routes to follow gentle curves rather than straight lines, and b) I redid the hex art for the jungle (including light jungle and hills with jungle). The background colour for the jungle hexes remains the same, but the symbol is very slightly darker. This change in brightness is enough to make the symbol look much clearer. I finally have a jungle symbol I am happy with.
This was a natural expansion of her previous changes to the hex art symbols. She had tweaked her jungle art multiple times over the course of various maps, including her first Azcan Empire map, various Patera maps, as well as Savage Coast and Shahjapur. The latter two even had a quite radical shift in palette to match the colours used in X9’s map. With this map, as she noted, she had at last landed on a satisfying mix of jungle symbols and colours to go with her expanded forest symbols.
The new style and art tweaks — including white border instead of black — all come together to make this a nice upgrade from the previous version. Thanks, Emma!
